You will never have to bend down to pick up your spent gun cartridges again with one of our highly practical magnetic topped thumbsticks or twisty sticks. A powerful magnet is inlaid into the top of the stick handle so that you can flip your stick down and pick up your cartridges or keys (or anything magnetic) off the ground.
The magnet is put in to the top instead of in the tip so that you don’t collect up all kinds of rubbish as you walk around.
These sticks make up part of our handmade range and all parts of these sticks are handmade from start to finish. The locally sourced wood to make the shanks is usually chestnut, hazel or ash which is of course seasoned and steam straightened.
These sticks are an excellent companion and make great gifts.
Bought in from a local stick maker, all the elements used to make these walking sticks are sourced and/or made locally. The handles have a powerful magnet in-bedded in the tops enabling the user to pick up their dropped keys or spent gun cartridges from the ground, without having to bend down to pick them up.
The magnet is built in to the handle and not the base to prevent the user from collecting up all sorts of rubbish while out walking. You need only to flip the stick upside down to pick things up.
The stick maker makes the sticks at a height that the user can lean on arms folded while out in the field. We can however, have these walking sticks made at any height you need and with a choice of different handles.
We have a feeling that these practical sticks won’t just be popular amongst people who go out shooting game. They are just as useful around the house to pick up dropped keys and things for people who have difficulty bending.
These complete walking sticks are made to the usual high standard that all of our handmade sticks meet. The shanks are selected, cut, dried for two to three years and then steam straightened. The handles are fitted to the shanks with a steel connecting rod, a horn spacer is added between the handle and the shank to make a seamless finish.
The sticks are then polished and finished with Danish oil and a brass ferrule attached to the tip.
Many hours of careful, thoughtful and creative work goes into stick making which you will appreciate when you hold the finished item in your hands.

These attractive country sticks are available in various different woods. We currently have stock of ash, hazel, chestnut, stag horn handled, junior sticks and wading sticks.
We find the sales usually increase this time of year as the weather starts to improve and the evenings become longer, bringing on the outdoor season.
The thumbstick is designed to be held with the thumb crooked over the dip of the V handle and is very popular among countrymen and outdoor types. We have some with some useful adaptations such as the whistle thumbstick which has a whistle cut into the stag horn handle. Good for dog-walkers and for calling for help!
Some customers also use thumbsticks at a cropped height of about 36 inches (91
centimetres) to use as a regular walking stick as they find this kind of handle more comfortable to grip. This may be the case for arthritis sufferers or people with other problems effecting the hands.
The wading sticks are basically thumbsticks that have been modified to aid fishermen fishing in rivers and lakes. The end is weighted to prevent the stick from floating (and floating off down river if you let it go!) and the stick has a lanyard, or long strap, that can be wrapped around the body. Both adaptations help the fisherman with balance and prevent him from loosing his stick.
We really love thumbsticks and we have just got some brand new handmade ones in. The new sticks are made from Hazel, two of which have attractive and unusual twisty parts caused by honeysuckle growing with the hazel tree. The honeysuckle has been kept and bonded on to the shaft as it is so beautiful.
Hannah comments, ” I love the way thumbsticks are sold and are so popular because of the natural process that went to produce them. When I walk through a coppiced woodland, I can see thumbsticks everywhere growing out of the trees, its great. I particularly like the ones with a taller V handle and the ones that have grown so perfectly that the stick maker doesn’t need to cut out any material from the handle to make it comfortable.
Our thumbsticks are long, usually at least 130 centimetres, which enables plenty of room for personalisation. You can add badges, engraved collars or plaques or some pyrography. The sticks we sell on Walking Sticks Online can be spilt into five main categories; sticks as mobility aids and medical sticks, collectible sticks, handmade and hand carved, patterned canes and sticks and seats for outdoor pursuits.
Our range of thumbsticks falls into the last category for outdoor pursuits. We have all-wood thumbsticks made from Ash, hazel and Chestnut, Antler handled sticks and handmade thumbsticks which are beautifully made.
My favourites are the Deer Antler thumbsticks as the shape of the Antler lends itself so perfectly to the design.
The thumbstick, as you can tell from its name is designed to be held with your thumb hooked in the fork of the Y of the stick and your fingers wrapped around the lower portion on the Y.
The Y of the stick should be at shoulder height for the user. Great for walks in the county, thumbsticks are also popular with children (boys LOVE sticks!) As they are made from wood, any of our thumbsticks can be cut to size with a hacksaw.

Here’s a nice comment from a customer made today:
”MAN WITH THUMB STICK PLUS DOG = FIT MAN HAPPY DOG
It is so easy to shop online at this site that I bought a beautifully crafted thumb stick for my husband to make his tramps through the countryside more enjoyable . He is absolutely delighted with it , it`s perfect for slashing down brambles and nettles, testing boggy ground, steadying ones self when it`s slippery, is very sturdy and the perfect height to lean on to when resting to gaze at the fabulous views . The dog likes it as well. Man plus stick means a walk is imminent.”
